What to Do When There’s No Water From Your Taps

What to Do When There’s No Water From Your Taps

One of the most frustrating plumbing emergencies you can experience is a lack of water. If you discover this issue first thing in the morning, you might not have water to shower or make that first pot of coffee. When you find that you’re not able to get water from your tap, knowing the right steps to follow will help your plumber provide more effective help.

Try a Different Tap

Your first step in correcting a plumbing problem is to see how far the problem has spread. Check other faucets in your home to see if you can get water from other sinks or the showerhead. Try flushing your toilets to see if the tanks refill normally.

If you do get water from other faucets, the problem is within that one line. Often, plumbing solutions for no water in this situation involve clearing a clogged pipe. A plumber can clear or replace a corroded pipe to restore proper flow to that specific tap.

Plumbing Solutions for No Water Include Checking Your Shut-Off Valve

You might discover that there isn’t water available from any of the taps in your home. In this situation, your next step should be to check your home’s main water shut-off valve. Most main valves have emergency shut-off features that will engage if there’s a problem. If the valve was engaged due to a false alarm, you can simply reset it.

Alternatively, you might discover that the valve engaged due to a leak. In this case, you’ll need a plumber to repair the leak. Keep the emergency shut-off engaged to protect against water damage until you can get the problem fixed.

Give Your Neighbors a Call

If you have checked your home without discovering a problem, the issue might have originated elsewhere in the system. Ask your neighbors if they have running water. If not, call your city’s water department. While plumbing solutions for no water in this case will be out of your hands, you may be able to find out how long you should expect to go without water.
